This photographic video is a somber reminder of the 100 year anniversary this year, 25th April, of the landing at Gallipoli.
An invasion of Turkey that achieved nothing but pain and sadness for all involved. Lest We Learn
"war what is it good for, absolutely nothing" Edwin Star
Pat McIntosh from THE SUSANS wrote TALL POPPIES after meeting “Uncle" Sabri a Turkish Journalist and ex political prisoner of the Turkish Government, whilst on her OE.
"Uncle" Sabri lived in “ANZAC House” in Ecceabat, Turkey. He seemed to attract young New Zealand and Australian travelers to his door, like some ANZAC magnet. He would then give his time to explain and guide the young travelers through the horrors of the Gallipoli Campaign on the Gallipoli Peninsula. He established the Anzac Dawn Service ceremonies at Gallipoli back in 1965, when less than 100 people were present.
TALL POPPIES was written upon Pats return to New Zealand.
It was recorded in York Street Studios, Auckland, New Zealand in December 1995 and released ANZAC Day, 25th April, 1996. It received radio airplay around the country.
